For anyone interested in visiting a variety of sights, entertainment and heritage, the Welsh Scenic Byway is well worth traveling. Stretching through Gallia and Jackson counties the Welsh Scenic Byway passes Welsh settlements, Welsh farms, churches and cemeteries as well as the Oak Hill Welsh Museum. We are marked no. 7 on the map below.

The Welsh-American Heritage Museum in the village of Oak Hill (412 Main Street) was originally a Congregational Church (1869). The museum is home to a collection of rare books, family albums, framed of Welsh-American and Welsh ancestors, an organ, piano, dolls, pictures, dishes and memorabilia.

During the summer, the Museum is open Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and is well worth a visit. Call Mildred Bangert, Curator, at 740-682-7057 for more information.

Other attractions include the our own Madog Center for Welsh Studies: we are located in the Elizabeth F. Davis House on the University of Rio Grande, Ohio campus and house a vast library of Welsh historical, genealogical and contemporary information. Visitors are welcome to call or visit us.

There are no fewer than eight Welsh Churches and cemeteries along the Byway forming a loop between Gallipolis and Jackson. The oldest of these churches is Tyn Rhos which was founded in 1841 and built in 1843. Also on route there are Nebo Church, Bethel Church, and Sardis Church.

Look out for the Ohio Department of Transportation Scenic Byway Program Signs (above) which have been partnered with the Madog Center's own Welsh Scenic Byway signs. These signs can be seen all along the Welsh Scenic Byway.
