The Alumni Association Board of Directors of the University of Rio Grande and Rio Grande Community College has constructed a Memorial Bell Tower.  This new campus landmark is dedicated to the University's alumni - past, present, and future.   The formal dedication was November 3, 2001 as part of the University of Rio Grande's 125th Anniversary celebration.  In recognition of the area's heritage the floor of the bell tower is paved with slate similar to that mined by the Welsh.  It was kindly donated by Richie Bros. Slate Company NY

The Madog Center Welsh Garden

Due to a generous donation from Mr. Ed Jones and Mr. & Mrs. Dwight Jones of Jackson, OH the Madog Center's Welsh Garden is flourishing. The garden is located in the courtyard of Wood Hall, on campus. The Welsh Flag is the centerpiece, encompassed by 17 red benches, beautiful foliage and flowers. Shortly, a commemorative monument will be erected and there are spaces for sculpture. Mr. Bob Evans, Bidwell, OH has kindly donated hundreds of Daffodil bulbs and much expertise. Visit the garden in the spring or summer and see its abundance and variety of beautiful flowers, bushes, and trees. On June 24th, 2001, members of the public attended the official opening of the garden.  See pictures of this event here.

"The Welshman feels that the struggles of his fathers have consecrated every field, and than the muse of his land has sanctified every mountain. And feeling this way makes him a true citizen. " ---Sir O. M. Edwards

Jeanette Albiez Davis Library

The Library's namesake, Jeanette Albiez Davis, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, received her Bachelor of Philosophy degree from Denison University and attended the Chautauqua New York Institute Library School. Before her marriage to Samuel S. Davis in 1927, she worked in the Cincinnati Public Library and taught in the Newport Kentucky school system. Her husband Samuel, served on the University's Board of Trustees for ten years. As former secretary of the Jasam Foundation, she was consistent in her annual support to the University, especially that which made the University's privately-funded and first dedicated library facility a reality in 1965. The Davis family's continued generous support through the Jasam Foundation helps to maintain and to upgrade this first-rate facility. Mrs. Davis died September 29, 1997.

The Grande Chorale

The Grande Chorale is a jazz show choir made up of students at Rio Grande. Their annual tours have taken the members to many locations in the USA, Mexico, and in Europe.

Welsh Tour 1999 - During the 1999 Tour, the Grande Chorale visited Wales as well as Scotland and England. While in Wales, the group visited many different locations and even performed on an evening broadcast of the Welsh version of the Tonight Show, called Heno.

The Grande Chorale has several Welsh tunes in their repertoire and while singing the hymn Penpark in the native Welsh language, they received a standing ovation from the Welsh listeners who later proclaimed that their Welsh pronunciation was perfect, in Theatr Felinfach.

Library Display and Exhibit

The University of Rio Grande believes that education is enhanced, whatever the field by the appreciation of art.  To this end, the campus is home to many pieces of art work, in the form of sculpture, prints and paintings. William Brown has most generously donated these original pieces to The Madog Center and the University of Rio Grande.  They can be seen on permanent display in the Madog Center and in the Davis Library on campus.

Also in the Davis Library, visitors and students may view old and rare Welsh books which are on permanent display.

Esther Allan Greer Museum, Welsh Exhibit
