William Brown and David Greenslade Exhibition
Between November 28 2000 and January 19 2001 art work by William Brown featuring poetry by David Greensalde appeared in the Greer Museum in Rio Grande. This exhibition was significant in many ways.
William Brown is himself from Canada, and David Greenslade is
well known in the US, and in the Oak Hill area, where he stayed while
touring the US writing his novel Welsh Fever. William Brown was already a successful
international artist before he came to Wales in the early 1990’s.
He was born in Toronto, Canada and raised in a Scottish
community. He spent some
time traveling in the US before going to France.
He has published in French and English and first published in
Welsh in 1998. William Brown moved to Wales and married a Welsh teacher. Near her school is Maesteg he set up his studio. He has curated several international exhibitions and has exhibited his work in many prestigious events worldwide. His work with the writer David Greenslade captures
the essence of Welsh folklore and myth with his vivid and exciting
style. The book MARCH was
launched in 1998 and has proved to be a great success.
To quote an article written in Ninnau
“William Brown has packed the book with imagery that is
completely typical of his style. The
book is filled with humour, mythological jokes, serious satire and
cross-references to local Welsh traditions” (Ninnau May 1
1998.) David Greenslade is an accomplished poet from
Wales. He is a qualified
teacher and has taught at all levels.
However, it is David Greenslade the poet who features in this
exhibition. He writes in
Welsh and English, yet his literature has been translated into German, Japanese,
Catalan, Gaelic and Uzbek. His writing has featured in Poetry Wales, Planet, Western
Mail and The Independent. He
writes for Ninnau and also Welsh Language publications such as Barn,
Barddas, Golwg, Tu Chwith and Y Cymro.
David has been to Southeastern Ohio many times and was at the
Welsh National Gymanfa Ganu in Ottawa this year with William Brown. On January 11th 2001 a gathering was held, and members of the public and Rio Grande staff and students were able to view the work while listening to The Grande Chorale sing in Welsh. Welsh food was prepared, including Welsh cakes, bara brith and lava bread. Black Mountain Liqueur punch was a huge success on such a cold evening! Some 50 people were in attendance and a good time
was had by all. William Brown has most generously donated these original pieces to the Madog Center and the University of Rio Grande. They can be seen on permanent display in the Madog Center and in the Davis Library on campus. Click here to learn more about William Brown.
